Whilst sometimes referred to as the African jungle elephant, its proper name is the African forest elephant and is the smallest of the elephant species. Their greatest threat, apart from deforestation, is the ongoing ivory trade with some 50,000 being killed each year across Africa alone. The ivory of the jungle elephant differs from that of the African bush elephant in that it is harder and has a pinkish tinge and is of great value to poachers.
