We were reluctant to put up this
African pygmy game lest it reinforced stereotypes but concluded
that we should not least to get your attention and dispel some of
those stereotypes! In the west the word
'pygmy' is often seen as a derogatory term referring to someone of
small stature. It is estimated that between 250,000 and 600,000 pygmies live in the Congo rainforest area as hunter gatherers who also barter and trade with non-forest dwellers. They live a traditional way of life that is under threat not least because
their forest environment is under attack from big business loggers but because they are afforded little or no legal protection in the countries where they reside; not recognised as citizens nor eligible for identity cards or recognised as land owners.
